Are you ready to peel back the layers of time? Join us for a unique photowalk exploring the hidden textures and untold stories etched into the alleys of Galveston’s historic district.

The Strand is a frequent photographer’s playground, but not many people deliberately focus on the less-polished side of Galveston’s The Strand Street.

Note, this event takes place the same day as Galveston’s Steampunk Festival in the Galveston Railroad Museum! The photowalk start time will be flexible, as we will start the photowalk after having lunch at Hubcap Cafe (see menu).

Join us for Lunch!

Before the photowalk, we will have lunch at Hubcap Cafe (11:30am). Click here to join us for lunch.

A Focus on Texture

Leave the tourist-filled Strand behind and get ready to train your lens on the overlooked beauty: weathered brickwork, peeling paint, intricate ironwork, and the interplay of light and shadow within these forgotten pathways.

Meetup Location

After lunch at Hubcap Grill on The Strand, we will gather on 20th Street, in the alley between The Strand and Mechanic St.

Uncovering History

Each crack, each faded sign whispers of Galveston’s rich past. We’ll discover a hidden side of the island, capturing the raw essence of buildings that have stood the test of time and multiple hurricanes and floods.

Lighting and What to Bring

This photowalk will begin when the sun is directly overhead, flooding the alleyways with sunlight. This will help us take great pictures with lots of texture and contrasting light and downward shadows. The photowalk will last about two hours, with plenty of time to walk about four blocks with plenty of lighting. After about 3pm, the shadow will get more angled, causing a strong contrast between the doors, walls, and pavement.

I recommend bringing your wide-angle and short-focus lenses. You may even find some interesting macro opportunities. If you want to avoid reflections on windows or puddles of water, you can bring your circular polarizer filters, too.

Sturdy, close-toed shoes and long pants are strongly encouraged for this photowalk, as the alleyways are not always 100% free of trip hazards and broken glass.

HoustonPhotowalks is a rain-or-shine group. We won’t cancel unless the mayor says to evacuate the city. Photography in the rain can be amazing, so join us even if the weather looks sketchy!
