This year, the peak days to see meteors will be the nights/mornings of August 11, 12, 13 and 14. I got permission to gather a small group in a field near Cuero, Texas. I also rented a tiny house nearby if you need to take a bathroom break during the night.

In previous years, I photographed the shower, but ended up with a lot of light pollution because it was too close to Houston city lights (see image above). So this year I tried to looked for something quite a bit darker, yet close enough to drive in a single day. The pasture is in the dark-green to blue area of the Dark Site Finder index, in between Cuero and Yorktown, Texas:

I will also have some snacks and bottles of water for everyone that attends. Feel free to bring your own if you’re picky or want to share. 🙂

Arrival time is flexible, but I suggest arriving no later than about 8pm so you can set up your gear before sunset. Between sunset and 10pm, we can chat, eat snacks, and discuss photography while waiting for the stars and meteors.

Provided:
– Area for us to gather and shoot
– Light Snacks
– Bottles of Water
– Area for parking

NOTE: I plan to bring some hotdogs and a small propane BBQ grill, but the property owner hasn’t given us the OK on that yet. As soon as I know for sure, I will update the description.

What to bring:
– Camera & sturdy tripod
– Lawn chair (if you want to sleep, bring one that folds flat)
– Bug repellant (preferably wipe-on, not spray)
– Flashlight (preferably one that has a *RED* LED)
– Any relevant weather-related gear (depending on weather conditions)

Optional:
– Camera trigger
– Blanket if you don’t sit on a lawn chair
– Snacks for you and/or to share

If you don’t want to stay up all night and need a place to crash, Cuero has several hotels. PLEASE don’t drive home sleepy and die in a car crash, there are many local options. Here are a few suggestions that are close to our shoot location, or on the way back to Houston:

Baymont by Wyndham – (361) 524-5186
Antler’s Inn – (361) 275-5766
Fairfield Inn by Marriott – (361) 275-5200

Actual address of the shoot location will be provided privately (this is private property so we can’t post the address on Meetup).
